Dubai Museum

Dubai Museum

Dubai Museum

A trip to Dubai always surprises me, every time when I go there I see a unique aspect of life in Dubai; thought to be a hive of activity. Contrasting with the modern and high buildings in Dubai city, Dubai Museum is an ideal and great place for people who want to explore the history and traditions of Arabs. This classical structure has the look of the real local architecture. It depicts evolution of Dubai city and its emerging prominence within a short period of time. Dubai Museum is located at Al Fahidi Fort, the oldest existing building in Dubai where you can see various interesting historical items, good size dioramas and archaeological exhibits presenting the traditional way of life in the Emirate of Dubai.   I went to the museum a few months ago while visiting the city and mesmerized by the beauty of it. The entertaining museum brings the city’s past and present together under one roof. Crossing the gate, the walkway followed by in a central courtyard dotted with small wooden fishing boats and traditional dwellings. Behind the heavy carved wooden doors there were displays of instruments and handcrafted weapons. Endearing dioramas demonstrate shopkeepers and craftsmen at work, some of them were enhanced with light effects. Other scenes express life at home, at the mosque, in the desert and the sea. I enjoyed seeing the old Dubai; when it was in its inception stages.   The most interesting display is to watch pearl merchants doing deals, grocery shops, spice stall etc. Dubai was known for its pearl exports until the 1930’s and it is thought to have been established as a fishing village in the early 18th century. The museum reveals the history, cultural heritage and customs of Dubai city as there were models of men and women wearing traditional dress their life style showcase the true sense of Emirati. Various artifacts are there from the Umayyad period.   You also come to know how locals struggled to select areas for settlement and importance of fishing and pearl diving to get food. Local animal species were kept there to show the simple life in a desert and one can understand the reason of growing palm trees in the region, from making houses to being used as fuel. Don’t miss the large well-lit gallery opposite the gift shop with its displays of unearthed artifacts. Surely you will be inspired by it as it’s always been fun when in Dubai.   [gallery ids="508,507,506,505,504,500,499,501,502,503,498"]Read more
